In my experience with distance learning during K-12 education, I have seen a range of technologies implemented, particularly during the pandemic. Tools like Google Classroom, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams became central to organizing lessons and maintaining communication between teachers and students. I found these platforms to be effective for facilitating class discussions, sharing assignments, and providing resources. However, some of the challenges included inconsistent internet access and the difficulty in fostering engagement in a virtual environment. I have not yet experienced more interactive tools like virtual reality (VR) classrooms or gamified learning platforms, but I would love to explore them. These technologies could offer more immersive learning experiences and help make education feel less distant by simulating real-world interactions.
Open Educational Resources (OER) are freely accessible, openly licensed materials that are used for teaching, learning, and research. These resources can include textbooks, lesson plans, videos, quizzes, and software. The key benefit of OER is that they are openly available, meaning educators can use, adapt, and share them without restrictions or high costs, making them an essential tool for improving access to education. I found a useful article about OER from the UNESCO website, which discusses how these resources help bridge educational gaps and make learning more inclusive. It also highlights the importance of collaborative knowledge-sharing to improve the quality of education worldwide. You can read more about OER here.
Working on Assignment 4, where I created a PowerPoint presentation for information dissemination, helped me refine my skills in organizing and presenting content in a concise and engaging manner. I learned how to use more advanced features in PowerPoint, like adding multimedia elements and using design templates to enhance the visual appeal of the slides. While I enjoyed the creativity of this assignment, I found that balancing the amount of text with visuals can be tricky, as too much information can overwhelm the audience. In the future, I would improve the clarity and flow of my slides by using fewer words and more imagery, ensuring that the content is easily digestible while still informative.
